Did you know that you can sell your flights, holidays and hotel rooms if you can’t use them?
Planned a holiday and now your plans have changed? Are you stuck with non-refundable flights and a hotel reservation? Don’t despair – you can sell your flights and holidays to someone else!
Just a few weeks ago I experienced a day full of travel fails that occurred on our trip around the UK, and while we were lucky enough not to lose out on any money or have to cancel our plans, it got me thinking about scenarios when plans change ahead of a trip and you’d like to recover the cash that would otherwise be lost, and give someone else a chance to take a trip! Fortunately, that’s where SpareFare comes in!
Missing A Trip & Losing Money
I recently had plans to take a long weekend break away to a European city – part of my aspirations to tick off as many fascinating new places as possible. I was super excited, I love a bit of me-time away from everything just walking and walking around unfamiliar streets and getting purposefully lost. Unfortunately, I was unable to use my flights due to unforeseen circumstances that meant there was no way I could (or even would) leave those who I love and who needed me to stay in London.
Beyond the worries about the situation itself, the last thing I wanted to think about was the money I’d lose from the missed flight. I was annoyed there wasn’t an easier way to give someone else the chance to be on that flight, and for me to recuperate at least a little bit of the money lost; a small grace in a pretty devastating time. The rules for refunds on flights (and indeed other travel expenses such as holiday packages and hotels) are often rather strict. Serious illness has to be proven by a doctor and of enough severity, and in my case, bereavement must be based on your relationship and confirmed by the correct and relevant paperwork, and the applications are lengthly and laborious.
When I heard about the services offered by SpareFare just a few weeks later, it seemed destined to be to solve this dilemma if it were to ever occur again in the future – and I only wish I’d known about them sooner so I might’ve been able to sell my ticket!
Here are a few ways in which SpareFare are able to help you do just that!
Why Use SpareFare
Many travel reservations are non-refundable and travel insurance usually only covers medical emergencies, which prevent a person from travelling. If you decide not to travel because you cannot bear another Christmas with the in-laws, that is not covered by insurance. This is where peer-to-peer marketplaces for travel come in. The exponential growth of online marketplaces over the past few years has been no short of an unpredicted phenomenon. The travel industry is no exception.
How to Sell An Airline Ticket
You can transfer your flight to someone else if your airline allows you to change the name associated with the flight. There is always a fee for the name change and they vary. Most low-cost airlines offer name changes as part of their official policy and you can do it easily from your airline account. The name change service is available for all of their flights and ticket options – you do not need to have purchased a special flexi ticket to use it. Some regular airlines, which do not allow name changes as an official policy, make exceptions for their customers. It is always worth calling your airline’s customer service and trying to persuade them to allow you to change the name for a fee.
How To Sell A Package Holiday
Whether you can resell your package holiday to someone else and how much it will cost you depends on your travel agent. You should check their terms and conditions or call customer service to ask. If your travel agent is based in the EU, they have to give you the option to change the names on the reservation by law.
How To Sell A Hotel Room
Hotel rooms are easiest to sell! You just call the hotel and inform them that the name of the main guest under the reservation has changed. Usually, there are no fees associated with the name change, but always ask your hotel to be sure.
A safe and secure way to sell your travel reservations
Lots of people buy their flights and hotel reservations way in advance when the prices are cheaper. However, plans often change and many travellers find themselves unable to use the holidays they have bought. This is where SpareFare.net comes in. The site allows sellers to list their flights and holidays for free and connects then with buyers looking for travel deals. SpareFare acts as an intermediary and offers fraud protection for buyers and sellers. If you are wondering about the details of the buying process, you can watch this short video.

Interesting, I didn’t know there was a service for this! I often see people selling their flights on backpacker groups but I don’t think many of them have much luck, especially because of the name change fee etc. Will have to remember this if I can’t take one of my trips!

Me neither! It’s good to know such a service exists, and pretty fun to see what kind of bargains can be found as a buyer too!

Me too! I Definitely will remember it for the future, not that I hope to cancel a trip anytime soon!
